$4.3 Billion San Francisco Water Improvement Project
Oak in Sunol

As the City of San Francisco updates its water delivery infrastructure, projects which may signficantly impact the environment will commence in 7 counties stretching from the Hetch Hetchy to the San Francisco Bay. EBCNPS along with a consortium of groups is providing input on impacts and mitigation for a suite of projects in Alameda county, especially near Sunol wilderness. The proposed project looks to extract another 25 million gallons of water a day from the Tuolomne river, as well as drain much of Alameda creek during drought years. There are many components to this project, so there are many opportunities for input. Below are links to two letters: one by EBCNPS and a second by Alameda Creek Alliance analyzing the efficacy and structure of a proper "Habitat Reserve Program" (HRP) which will be used as the primary mitigation tool for the greater SFPUC project.

Please contact Lech Naumovich at conservation@ebcnps.org, or the conservation director Laura Baker, with any questions.

The Bay Institute released a report entitled, The Bay Institute Ecological Scorecard: 2005 San Francisco Bay Index measures conditions for the whole Bay. The report links deteriorating health of the Bay to decreased water flows from area creeks and rivers.

The Tuolumne River Trust report, From the Tuolumne to the Tap: Pursuing a Sustainable Water Solution for the Bay Area, shows that the SFPUC water plan is based on inflated projections of future water needs and fails to pursue sustainable measures that would protect the Tuolumne River.
